General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible manual and semi-skilled equipment operating work in the collection of municipal solid waste and maintenance of streets, drainage systems, parks and landscaping.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs routine manual labor and general equipment operator work in collection of garbage as well as maintaining and repairing streets and grounds for use by town residents. Emphasis of work is support of equipment operators or supervisors in carrying out the various duties of the Public Works department. Work may include performing routine maintenance and servicing of equipment used. Work also includes assisting with a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks when assigned to a crew. Work may require the employee to serve on-call and respond to significant call-back work outside normal business hours of 8 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday. The employee is subject to hazards associated with public works including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, odors, dusts, mists, and oils or other hazardous materials. Work around raw and household waste is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is evaluated for general safety, proper equipment operation, and overall quality standards as determined by the Public Works director and is checked daily by visual inspection and general feedback. Work is performed under regular supervision and is observed while in progress or upon completion.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Provides general sanitation services for town residents and at town facilities.
- Operates landscaping equipment used to maintain town parks and other properties.
- Operates a variety of power tools including air hammers, chain saws, pole trimmers, hedge trimmers, mowers, and related equipment.
- Loads and unloads trucks used by crews and equipment operators; moves supplies used in tasks of the department.
- Washes and cleans assigned equipment; performs routine servicing such as checking fluid levels, tire pressures, changes oil and filters; sharpens lawn mower blades.
- Assists in operation of a sanitation packer trucker to collect household garbage, yard waste or other solid waste including appliances, furniture, or other bulky items.
- Assists in hauling asphalt, stone, gravel, sand, salt, and waste to and from worksites.
- Assists in removing snow and ice, spreading salt during inclement weather events.
- Assists in repair or installation of street signs.
- Assists in removal of dead animals.
- Assists in chipping yard waste, vacuuming leaves, raking, shoveling, sweeping or other related activities.
- Assists in installation of catch basins, curb and gutter, or driveway pipe repairing asphalt streets or concrete structures
- Assists in miscellaneous projects involving painting, minor carpentry or other similar tasks.
- Maintains simple records of work activities.

- Working knowledge of traffic laws governing equipment operation.
- Working knowledge of the practice of operating and servicing medium size equipment.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards related safety precautions for large equipment in heavy traffic and construction sites.
- Working knowledge of public works or utilities function to which assigned.
- Some knowledge of public works methods, facilities, maintenance and repair requirements and materials used.
- Skill in working as a team member and promoting teamwork including providing training, feedback and support to supervisor or lead worker.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to deal courteously with the general public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and crew members.
- Ability to prepare and maintain simple records.
- Ability to work under extreme conditions.
Desirable Education and Experience
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, kneeling, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds of force constantly.
- Must posses the visual acuity to operate equipment in a safe manner.
- Minimum requirements:
- Graduation from high school.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.
Ability to obtain any certifications required by the Town.
40 Hours Weekly. Salary grade: $15.00 hr.
Woodfin Police Department
Responsibilities and duties:
- Safeguard the citizens of Woodfin by proactively enforcing the laws of North Carolina and the Ordinances of the Town of Woodfin.
- Act as the initial point of contact for investigations and responsible for writing reports.
- Actively patrolling the Town of Woodfin while detecting and preventing possible crimes.
- Other various duties.
Qualified applicants will possess the minimum, of all the following:
- Valid NC driver’s license
- Successful completion of a Basic Law Enforcement Training course in North Carolina and currently holds active North Carolina certification
- Ability to pass an extensive background investigation and interview process
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or successful completion of General Education Development (GED) program
- The applicant must have the ability to perform the physical activities of the Job
Beginning Salary for a first-time law enforcement officer is $40,578.00/yr
Take home patrol vehicle provided.
